Great episode. Living in the SF Bay Area, where specialty coffee is abundant, this is even more interesting as I had no idea the backstory of the Clover. That being said, I'm very happy with my old school Technivorm Mokkamster.

Stop and read! Two glaring omissions in Hoffman’s video. 1) Starbucks actually did eventually refuse to sell us parts. We didn’t just make the switch to v60 because we wanted a way fking more difficult way to make coffee we did it cuz we were forced to. Clover goes down, you can’t repair it, you pull out the v60s. There certainly was malice involved. I don’t blame Starbucks. Who wouldn’t do the same. 2) He didn’t even mention Clover Vertica. This was a key part of the Siren System announced in 2021 and is well on its way to having one in every location this year or maybe next. This will make another massive impact on the industry. While specialty was able to crawl its way back to batch brewing most of its filter coffee Starbucks is shifting to each cup being brewed to order again. When the public starts to consider brew-to-order the status quo and specialty doesn’t have a machine to compete with Starbucks’ 1-2m lead times, we’re going to look kinda shitty. You can get some batch or wait 5+ minutes. - from my boi, Bailey

It sounds so weird to hear someone say they are going to replace something expensive, complicated and unreliable with a human instead of more technology. What a time it was.

Kudos to the production team for this extremely professional, slick, and modern documentary. Refreshing change from the studio work (not that there's anything wrong with the usual), but nice to learn so much about a niche area of specialty that I never knew existed. Cheers!

I was a barista for Starbucks from 2013-2017 and I remember somewhere around 2014 or 2015 the store I was working in at the time brought in a Clover to go along with the launch of the Reserve line of coffees they were promoting. I was working through their coffee master program at that time, and it became my favorite way to brew and try the different coffees we had. I didn't get into specialty until years after leaving Starbucks, and didn't realize the connection the Clover had with the adoption of the V60 by the specialty market. I love these history videos, thanks so much for the work you put into them
